EKO Cyprus: Presentation of the Album "Journey of Memory"
A photographic journey through the cultural heritage of occupied Cyprus
Faithfully adhering to the principles and values that define its operation, while focusing on societal support and cultural heritage, EKO Cyprus has presented the album titled "Journey of Memory." This unique album sheds light on the rich history and cultural identity of the occupied areas of Cyprus, thus contributing to the preservation of collective memory 50 years after the brutal invasion of 1974.
The presentation event took place on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the Old Town Hall of Nicosia, in the presence of the mayor, Mr. Charalambos Prountzos, the contributors to the book, partners of EKO Cyprus, members of the media, and numerous guests.
The album showcases significant monuments, churches, castles, theaters, and monasteries, spanning from Morphou to the easternmost point of Cyprus, the Karpasia peninsula, and the Apostolos Andreas Monastery. The publication marks the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion, with EKO Cyprus aiming to highlight the importance of protecting these monuments as part of our national identity, as well as educating the younger generation about the history of our homeland.
The creation of the album is the result of dedicated research and writing by Mr. Kostas Charalambides, while the photographic approach of Mr. Michalis Georgiades offers a unique perspective, focusing on the folk traditions of each region.
In his remarks at the album’s presentation event, the CEO of EKO Cyprus, Mr. Giorgos Grigoras, stated:
“We believe it is our duty to keep the memory of our occupied lands alive. In this context, EKO Cyprus contributes to initiatives that highlight our rich cultural heritage. The album titled ‘Journey of Memory’ aims to bring to life the memories of our occupied homeland and offer to the younger generation—who may not be familiar with these remarkable landmarks— the opportunity not only to learn about them but also to comprehend their significance through the accompanying texts. We thank everyone who contributed to the creation of this exceptional publication.”
During his speech, the Mayor of Nicosia, Mr. Charalambos Prontzos, emphasized:
“On the occasion of the album’s presentation, I would like to announce the symbolic planting of 50 trees in Eleftherias Square. The trees that will be planted today and in the coming days represent hope and renewal. They represent the resilience of our people to overcome hardships and move forward with determination and faith, despite the challenges we face. This initiative is part of EKO Cyprus’s Corporate Social Responsibility program and reflects our continuous effort to keep our unwavering faith until we achieve a sustainable and functional solution that will truly reunite our land and our people.”
After the conclusion of the presentation, five trees were symbolically planted in Eleftherias Square. In the coming days, an additional 45 trees, donated by EKO, will be planted in the capital's central square. These trees symbolize the 50 years of occupation. Meanwhile, special panels have been installed in Eleftherias Square, where passersby can view the photographs included in the album.
